A remarkably exciting destination, Veracruz is located in Mexico’s eastern region along
the Gulf coast. It has a mainland area of 72,815 square kilometers (28,114 sq mi) borders
the states of Tamaulipas to the north, Oaxaca and Chiapas to the south, Tabasco to the
southeast, Puebla, Hidalgo, and San Luis Potosi to the west, and the Gulf of Mexico to the
east. Includes several islands totaling another 58 square kilometers (22.4 sq mi).
Throughout most of the state of Veracruz, the climate is tropical, hot and humid. Although at
the foothills of the mountains the climate is cool and humid, only in the mountain regions the
climate becomes cold. Veracruz has an impressive natural scenery and also picturesque cities and
towns that have preserved their local architecture that overflows with history.
The city of Veracruz, an important port and commercial center, lies on the approximate
center of the long fertile crescent that captures the Gulf of Mexico. Is a modern oversea
harbor with many monuments to show to the visitors its colorful history. Veracruz is
specially abuzz during Carnival season. People’s enthusiasm towards life reflects in
dancing couples, abundant music, and ebullient street activity. In the city’s plazas,
known for their beautiful gardens, you can watch couples dance to the rhythm of
danzon, an experience that will take you back to another era. At the Port of
Veracruz, located at the city’s shoreline, you can find Fort San Juan de Ulua
built during the 16th and 17th centuries to protect the port from pirate attacks.

Veracruz: Overflows with History
Xalapa, the state capital of Veracruz, is located in a mountain zone. This city is known
for its eclectic architectural offering, has a blend of Neoclassic, Morish and Neogothic
styles, as you’ll see in such buildings as Palacio de Gobierno, the Palacio
Municipal and the Cathedral. Its wonderful Historic Center was declared a World
Heritage Site by the UNESCO. Thanks to its rich cultural heritage, Xalapa hosts important
artistic and cultural events, such as the International Jazz Festival
and the June Music Festival, which is organized by the Xalapa Symphony Orchestra.
Veracruz’s geographic location and wonderful climate make it the ideal destination to do
all kinds of outdoor recreational activities, including hiking, rafting, horseback riding
and exciting rappelling outings with experienced guides. Pico de Orizaba National
Park covers 19,750 hectares (48,782 acres) and has the highest mountain in Mexico.
At the town of Catemaco you can take boat rides across the lagoon to the Isla de los
Monos, famous for its howler monkey population. The reef system Sistema Arrecifal
Veracruz, is one of Mexico’s most important marine parks due to it’s abundant coral
formations. Along the coast you can visit the Costa Esmeralda, a 50 km (31 mi)
beach strip north of the Port of Veracruz. Finally, if you wish to make your way through
history you can explore some archeological zones like El Tajin, Cempoala and Quiahuiztlan.

Host to important cultural and sporting events, Veracruz is famous for the music,
dancing and festive atmosphere. Among of the entertainment and sports events that
take place in this wonderful destination you can find the Festival del Caribe
which is performed at Boca del Rio and draws guests from various Caribbean nations, and
the Torneo Sabalo de Plata, an important annual fishing tournament that takes
place in May. In Veracruz you’ll find many ways to enjoy a night out in town, near the
boardwalk you can dance to the music of harps and marimbas in the city’s squares. You
